The stomachThe stomach is a J-shaped, pouchlike organ, which is underneath the diaphragm. It receives food from the esophagus, mixes it with gastric juice, starts the digestion or proteins, carries n limited absorption, and moves the food into the small intestine.
Things you will find in the stomach: Rugae- The irregular ridges in the mucous membrane covering the anterior part of the hard palate Gastric Acid- A thin, clear, virtually colorless acidic fluid secreted by the stomach glands and active in promoting digestion Chief Cells- the zymogenic or peptic cells of the gastric mucosa which secrete pepsinogen Parietal Cells- large spheroidal or pyramidal cells that are the source of gastric hydrochloric acid and are the site of intrinsic factor production. Pepsin- protein-splitting enzyme that the gastris glands secrete. HCI- A clear, colorless, fuming, poisonous, highly acidic aqueous solution of hydrochlorine, HCl, used as a chemical intermediate and in petroleum production, ore reduction, food processing, pickling, and metal cleaning. Found in the stomach in dilute form. Intrinsic Factor- A substance secreted by the stomach that enables the body to absorb vitamin B12. It is a glycoprotein Chyme- The pulpy acidic fluid that passes from the stomach to the small intestine, consisting of gastric juices and partly digested food Mucus- A slimy substance, typically not miscible with water, secreted by mucous membranes and glands for lubrication, protection, etc. Pyloric Sphincter/ valve- A ring of smooth muscle fibers around the opening of the stomach into the duodenum. |
